The poster image for the 4th edition of the Valletta Film Festival (VFF) has been launched by Film Grain Foundation, organisers of the ten-day event, which is taking place between the 8th-17th June.
The artwork, which consists of a collage of elements showcasing Valletta and its cinematic summers, was designed by visual artist Ritty Tacsum. “To me, the Valletta Film Festival is evocative of the onset of summer, so I wanted that to transpire in the work I created, in some way or another,” she noted.
Cinema will continue to beat in the heart of the capital this year with introduction of a new screening venue to the festival: the newly-renovated Valletta Campus Theatre (ex-MITP), which will allow the festival to accommodate more screenings. Moreover, Pjazza Teatru Rjal will, for the fourth year running, serve as the flagship outdoor venue, hosting all fiction feature in-competition titles, with Spazju Kreattiv and Embassy Cinemas screening documentary, shorts and sidebar sections.
Indeed, the concept for the poster was inspired by Valletta itself, according to the artist. “I wanted to showcase the city in which the festival takes place, the time and season; and of course, a reference to the 4th edition of the festival. The artwork is a layering of elements which together represent an idyllic summer’s day during the Valletta Film Festival: an early swim in the city, followed by watching a movie outdoors, in the evening,” she stated.
Oliver Mallia, one of the directors of VFF, said Film Grain Foundation was delighted with the design produced for this year’s festival poster. “Ritty’s multi-layered composition, showing playful, yet distorted images of Valletta, combined with filmic elements pinned by the moon, which mysteriously looks down upon the ten days of outdoor screenings, reflects the large complexity of stories, spaces and themes which will be explored at the fourth edition of Malta’s largest cinematic event,” he highlighted.
The full programme for the Valletta Film Festival will be launched in May, with festival passes already on sale here.
The Valletta Film Festival is supported by Arts Council Malta through the Cultural Partnership Agreement. The official partners of the festival in 2018 are HSBC Bank Malta, The Phoenicia Malta and Valletta 2018.
