ETHIOPIQUES – THE REVOLT OF THE SOUL
The eponymous documentary tells the story of the French music journalist Francis Falceto, who masterminded the Éthiopiques series of CDs. This infectious music influenced by Western genres such as soul, funk, rock ‘n’ roll and jazz as tolerated in the late 20th century while Emperor Haile Selassie was in power in Ethiopia but everything changed with the military coup of 1974 when the brutal Derg regime got into power. Eshete, who for many years lived as an exile in the United States, tells the story of forgotten Ethiopian musicians who became a considerable inspiration for free jazz and pop music worldwide. Éthiopiques also features playful animations and finishes with Beyene’s comeback, including live performances and recordings for Mistakes on Purpose, the 30th Éthiopiques CD in the series.
