The fifth edition of Valletta Film Film will open with the Finnish romantic Comedy AURORA on Friday 14 June 2019 at Pjazza Teatru Rjal, the flagship theatre of the festival.
‘Aurora’ is a melancholic blend of comedy and drama and is set in the snowy Finish region Lapland. Here, the aimless, heavy-drinking party girl Aurora meets an Iranian refugee, Darian, who is looking for help. The two of them agree to help each other in untraditional, but vital ways, that will shape the future for the both of them.
Talking about the film, director Miia Tervo, said that she wanted to do a quality film with silly and warm humour by reaching towards sensitive cinematic poetry with some honest dark shades and romantic comedy.
“I wanted to show the inner reality of a young woman in the arctic ghetto coping with inherited barriers against love and life. To show northern magic instead of superimposed exotism. To salute the biggest force of nature, love.”
Tervo is an award winning writer and director from Finnish Lapland. Her short films have been screened and awarded around the world. The Little Snow Animal (2010) was EFA- nominated in 2010. Clumsy Little Acts of Tenderness (2015) was also screened around the globe from Palms Springs to Obernhousen and was competing for Prix Europe.
‘Aurora’ features actors Mimosa Willamo and Amir Escandri. It is produced by Max Malka for Dionysos Films and is financed by Finnish Film Foundation, Yle National Broadcasting Company and Nordisk Film.
